How do I survive a long distance relationship at a Military Academy? Creative Sending Ideas?
How can I survive a relationship only through letters with my boyfriend while he’s away at a military academy? Anyone with military LDR experience have any creative/crafty ideas for letters or creative ideas on what to send him? I’m having a hard time with ideas on what to send since I can’t send him any objects..
Thank you, Blondie, That was GREAT help!!! Since it is Annapolis and the Marine Corps. Thank you greatly.
Oh, and I forgot to mention there’s the possibility of myself attending West Point at the same time…
You’re absolutely right about not sending any objects. That could actually get him into trouble. Also, do not send any kind of food items or any musical cards — those things could also cause problems for him. So, really, the only thing you can do is send letters. When my niece was at boot camp for the Marines, I wrote to her A LOT because I knew that sometimes letters from family and friends were the only good things about her days. After just a short while, the letter-writing became really difficult (there’s not much to say when you’re writing so frequently that there’s not enough time between letters for anything really interesting to happen to write about). So I got as creative as I could within the military’s imposed letter-writing limitations. I printed news articles from the internet about celebrities and events that she was interested in, and I sent those. I kept her filled in on what was going on with her two favorite TV shows every week, since Marine recruits can’t watch TV while they’re at boot camp. I wrote her letters from her cat. I even made up an imaginary friend and wrote letters from him and told of all kinds of adventures he was having while she was gone.
I know it’s tough communicating only through snail mail. We’ve gotten so used to telephone and internet communication that it really feels like you’re stepping WAY backwards in time, being reduced to letter writing as your only way to communicate. And with all the military restrictions on mail, that just makes it even harder. But just remember, it’s a temporary situation and you’ll get through it just fine. I’m sure there are other ways to get creative with letter writing than what I’ve mentioned, but the things I mentioned are just the things I did when I found myself in the same situation.
